SR 500 Thurston Way

Client: Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)
Project location: Vancouver, Washington
Project cost: $23 million
As part of a design-build partnership, DMJM Harris was selected by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to construct a new interchange at State Highway 500 and Thurston Way. The interchange replaced the traffic-clogged crossroads in the Westfield Towncenter, one of the region's busiest shopping centers. This is the first project awarded by WSDOT using the design-build delivery process and it was started in January 2001 and completed in October 2002.
The project is comprised of a single-point urban interchange with a 216-foot-long single span concrete spliced-girder bridge and associated roadway improvements. Keys to project success included maintaining traffic movements throughout construction and providing property access through construction phasing, as well as DMJM Harris’s ability to provide design on a fast-track basis.
DMJM Harris provided illumination; traffic signals; and surveillance, control and driver information (SC&DI). The project also included construction of new ramps; reconstruction of the existing ramps at the SR 500/Andressen Road interchange; new lighting; and provision of SC&DI elements, including ramp metering, mainline detection, a closed-circuit television camera and a variable message sign.
