Poletti 500MW Combined Cycle Power Plant

Client: New York Power Authority (NYPA)
Project location: Astoria, New York
Project cost: $350 million
DMJM Harris was selected as the Program Manager/Construction Manager for a new 500 MW Combined-Cycle Power Plant. NYPA constructed this plant on approximately 4-acres adjacent to the existing Charles Poletti Power Project.
This new plant is currently one of the cleanest, most-efficient power plants in New York City’s history, and with the help of DMJM Harris, fills the capacity margin shortfall with regard to “in-City” generation. Although the City had installed peaking generators to help avert rolling blackouts, it was critical to the environmental impacts of generating its power needs that highly efficient generating stations were put in place as quickly as possible.
The plant is now fired with natural gas and has low sulfur Jet-Kero as a backup fuel. The major components of the plant included two combustion turbines and generators (CTG), two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), one steam turbine generator (STG) arranged in a two on one layout, and an air cooled condenser.
