Central Connecticut State University

Client/Owner: Connecticut Department of Public Works
Project location: New Britain, Connecticut
Construction cost: $30,000,000
DMJM Harris served as the construction administrator for this significant signature project that transformed Central Connecticut State University. The $38 million project included a new Energy Center, tunnels and a complete rehabilitation of all campus utilities.
The new 21,000-square foot Energy Center houses three 40,000-pounds per hour boilers and two 2,000-ton chillers. As the construction administrator, we were responsible for providing complete project oversight for the most significant infrastructure project at Connecticut’s oldest public university. The steam distribution system serves more than 30 buildings, whose tie-ins were coordinated by our on-site construction management staff. The work within these buildings and their mechanical equipment rooms included switching from remote air-cooled chillers in some areas, and installation of space cooling equipment for the first time in others.
The utilities upgrade included relocating the existing overhead high voltage distribution system into the new tunnel network. Other campus utilities that were upgraded as part of this project include water, storm water, sanitary, fire protection, electrical, fiber, natural gas and telephone.
