Pier S Container Terminal

Client: Port of Long Beach
Project location: Long Beach, California
Project cost: $300 million
JWD Group, in association with Cash & Associates, provided conceptual planning and operational analysis using computer simulation of a 160-acre brownfield site. The yard potential was developed for phasing from a low-density start-up operation using wheeled storage and grounded empties to a more typical high-density yard using rubber-tire gantries (RTG) and top-picks for loaded containers and side-picks for empties. A very high-density layout using rail-mounted gantry cranes was also included. The facility includes an on-dock intermodal rail yard, administration office, maintenance building, combined crane maintenance and marine operations building, reefer wash and inspection facilities.
