I-95 Roadway Access Improvements at Philadelphia International Airport

Client: City of Philadelphia
Project location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Project cost: $80 million
DMJM Harris produced the final design for the reconstruction of the interchange linking I-95 to the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). This project provides access to a new international terminal at the airport, the fastest growing airport in the nation. In addition to our responsibilities encompassing design, permitting, and construction documents for 3.5-miles of new access ramps and six bridges, DMJM Harris also coordinated utility relocations; handled right-of-way acquisitions; coordinated mass transit service; and developed highway lighting, highway and airport signing and landscaping.
The design and construction of the interchanges was fast-tracked to coincide with the delayed opening of the international terminal. Design was completed in ten months, and construction was completed over a period of 18 months. Several innovative procedures were used to meet this aggressive schedule. Most notable among these was separating the construction into three contract packages: foundations, structural steel procurement and general construction.
